Recently I was contacted to help with a very fearful 100 lb dog. As a recent graduate it was my first “big dog” case in fear and aggression. I wanted to be sure my training plan was perfect and consulted Kate. She listened to all the information I had, gently nudged me out of some wrong decisions and replaced them with correct ones and I took the whole thing to the owner. The dog is thriving and the owners are thrilled. Kate’s experience, training methods and knowledge = very lucky dogs (and owners) that employ her help whether local or like me, long distance.

We sought out and found Kate to help us with our rescue dog that we adopted about a year ago. During our first year, we lucked out and experienced almost no behavior issues. But once he reached about the 2-year old mark, a few minor but concerning issues started cropping up with some regularity. After poking around Youtube videos for ideas, which were completely ineffective and in retrospect likely made some of the issues worse, we decided to seek professional help.

Given the nuanced nature of the issues (dog aggression, resource guarding, and humping – but only in very specific situations), I suspect Freddy presented a challenging assignment. Despite that, we are more than pleased with Kate’s help and the outcomes with our dog.

I attribute this success to a few key elements of Kate’s approach:

• The very thorough client in-take and background questionnaire
• The clearly written and described training handouts we received as homework
• The specific behavior modification examples of her pets and others that she described during our in-person session
• Her explanations of dog psychology and linking it to why certain approaches work and others don’t

Although our homework training required real commitment (in patience and time), we’ve seen an 80 to 90% improvement in Freddy’s problem areas, and a complete elimination of one problem behavior in particular. Freddy gives Kate 4 paws up!

Kate went above and beyond to help us with our dog, Honey. We rescued Honey but after being with us for about a month, Honey began biting people entering our home. My boxer has stranger danger, meaning he is fearful of strangers. Kate has helped come up with activities and techniques to help Yoda (boxer) deal with situations inside and outside of the house. My wife and I were searching for a Positive Reinforcement Dog trainer, which is more challenging than one would think as most trainers use some aversive techniques.

Before I contacted Kate, I was feeling really down as I was beginning to think that my dog, Bonnie, would never be able to walk well on the leash.  We trained Bonnie on a head halter and worked on basics like Watch Me to help redirect her on walks.  Kate showed me we can do it and we did!

Kate was recommended to us by a friend and we couldn’t be happier that she came into our life.  We were looking for help with our black lab/pit mix who could be aggressive with unfamiliar people when they came to the house or into her space on a walk.  From the start, Kate helped us to understand some of the science behind Maddie’s behavior; explained her positive reinforcement approach, and gave us examples and “homework” after each session.  I’m now a firm believer of the positive reinforcement model because I’ve seen how our dog has improved dramatically.  Kate was able to specifically tailor a step-by-step program for us to follow and was always available for questions and feedback between sessions.  The decision to have Kate educate us and help Maddie was the best thing we could have done for our dog and our family!

Overall, we are extremely happy. Our 8lb cavapoo male puppy Tiberius came into our household in March and we spent the first four months just trying to survive, he was like having a newborn. Once our routine stabilized and he was somewhat potty trained we knew it was time for some basic training. The vet recommended Kate. We bought the six session package where she would come to our home for an hour – it was $$ but we thought it would be a great investment. Most important to us was being able to call the dog to safety, getting him to goto bed, and perfect potty training. All of these things were achieved. Kate was awesome! My husband and I were having problems with our puppy suddenly displaying crate aggression. All of the local dog trainers were booked in our area and we were referred to Kate from out of state! Kate is a wonderful dog trainer! As a first time dog owner, adopting a Shiba Inu to our home is wonderful and overwhelming!

For our first session, Kate traveled to our Queens home and showed us the basic commands like “touch”, “leave it”, “find it” etc., showed us how to do harness training to and crate training, to help him be less fearful of those things and helped us understand the dog’s body language and their thinking.

We learned so much about how to train our dog using positive reinforcement, and lots of patience and love! With lots of printed documents and followed up emails, Kate’s knowledge and experiences helped us and our newly adopted furbaby adjust pretty quickly!

Rescued by training helped my golden retriever Scotty get over his fear of  taking walks after a dog attacked him. Kate provided  and demonstrated very useful techniques to help him overcome his fear. Now Scotty and I are back to taking our  long walks together!

I live in the suburbs of Chicago and have never had the pleasure of working with Kate, but her Facebook page is at the top of my favorite trainer (or doggie life coach) pages. The dogs all look like they’re having a blast working with her. She is exactly what you want in a dog trainer, only using positive reinforcement, science-based, force free and fear free techniques. We worked with Kate when we adopted our first fearful dog, Bambi, and again later with our second even more fearful dog, Munchie Browns. Kate has also been guiding the training when medication is needed (in collaboration with a vet behaviorist) which is the case with Munchie Browns. In both cases, Kate focused on each dog’s needs to develop a training plan for us to learn how to manage their anxieties and build their confidence through counter conditioning and positive reinforcement, never with fear or force. She never promises any magic overnight fixes but real, achievable goals that have allowed our dogs to gain the quality of life they deserve. Munchie’s first 6 months with us she wouldn’t go near the front door of our house. Today we are able to walk down our Brooklyn sidewalk and even go to the park on occasion.

Throughout our work with Kate she’s paid a lot of attention to us, the humans, as well. She checks in regularly and follows up. Kate goes above and beyond for both her human clients and their dogs. We’ve felt nothing but supported while working with her.

I rescued one year old pit bull mix Yeti from the local SPCA at the end of March 2020. The first year of his life was a mystery, as he was a stray. Several weeks after I adopted Yeti, he began to demonstrate odd, rather aggressive behavior. A local trainer recommended Kate. Though I was skeptical about a training session via Zoom, after our first session with Kate, Yeti and I had learned a lot. Kate was patient and encouraging during the session and follow up sessions. Kate is a wealth of knowledge when it comes to all things dogs. She helped me to find an appropriate daycare for Yeti, suggested unique ways to feed him (via snuffle mat), and reinforced the fact that dogs can and should be taught to respond through positive communication. I’d like to start off with the following: I could not recommend Kate (Rescued by Training) more highly!  Putting it simply, Kate is the best. I was very distraught with my highly fear-aggressive rescue, Shelby, a 65 lb mix of sled dog/shiba/Sheltie.  It was getting to the point where she would become aggressive towards us if we tried to touch her. So I was referred to Kate and it was the best thing I ever did.

Kate came to my home and was able to assess the situation. She totally understood my dog and knew what she needed. She taught us what to do, how to help lessen Shelby’s fear of touch, and explained what a highly fearful dog needs. She takes her time and really explains things to you so you really understand why what she is teaching you will work.

Kate has been wonderful and so helpful for us on our journey with our dog Chief, from day one!  When Chief was surrendered to the shelter, he was completely shut down and terrified. Through Kate, I was able to sit with Chief and get to know him a little in the shelter, and able to bring him home.

We enrolled in Kate’s “Mind Your Manners” training course, which taught us to train Chief in a positive way built on trust.  But even more so than that, Kate has gone above and beyond to help us not just train Chief but to get him to open up and become less fearful.

Since his adoption, she has been available to answer questions on how to address certain issues we were having with him, from stealing socks to being terrified of guests to walking the streets of New York.  Through Kate’s sound and loving advice, Chief has come leaps and bounds from the shut-down dog he was in the shelter, and is enjoying life now!
