Module 12: Bringing Home Baby – Before Baby Comes Home
In this module we’re covering about planning ahead as much as possible before the baby comes home.
During your third trimester you want to do as much planning ahead as possible.
Check your dog’s vaccines and wellness schedule. Make sure there’s nothing routine that will need to be done in the first month or so after baby’s arrival. You don’t want to have to take your dog in for a rabies shot or something else that could be done sooner.
And if by this point in the course you expect your dog might struggle with all the changes, it might also be a good idea to talk to your vet about having some anti-anxiety medication on hand, in case your dog needs it.
Do some shopping! Stock up on supplies like treats, chews, toys, puzzle toys and other enrichment items. Have them ready so when people start asking if there is anything they can do to help, you can have what you need for them to stuff Kongs or puzzle toys. It can help to make a list with the Kong recipe or feeding instructions and keep it on your fridge so when someone offers to help, all the information they need is there.
Remember you can add dog stuff to your baby registry. Having dog stuff will allow you to focus more on baby so in a sense, dog stuff helps baby too!
Be sure you have your caretaker plan for where dog will go for delivery and maybe a few days after homecoming, so you and baby have time to settle in for a few days before trying to introduce dog.
