Dog Communication
Just like people, dogs communicate when they’re happy, upset, nervous, fearful or have other emotions. But dogs can only communicate through their body language and vocalizations. For us, learning what they’re telling us can be like learning a foreign language but you must learn to read your dog’s communication to know if they’re feeling safe or unsafe.
Everyone knows that a growling dog is upset, but we need to learn the more subtle signs that your dog gives off before they growl or are super obvious about their discomfort.
Communication can range from very subtle signs like eyebrows furrowing, yawning or lip licking to very clear, loud communication like growling or biting.
It’s important to look at the whole dog, not just one feature. We want to consider how the dog’s weight is shifted or being carried, as well as their ears, eyes, tail, and mouth or muzzle, including the small muscles in their face.
As Family Paws says “Ears, Eyes, Tail, Muzzle, gather the clues to solve the puzzle.”
