How Dogs Learn

Understanding how dogs learn is foundational to everything else we do in training and behavior modification. Without this knowledge, it is easy to misinterpret behavior, rely on ineffective strategies, or blame the dog for outcomes that are actually shaped by learning and environment.

Dogs are not choosing behaviors based on morality, stubbornness, or intent to challenge us. They are responding to what has worked before and to what they predict will happen next.

There are two primary ways dogs learn. Through consequences and through associations.

Both are always happening. Whether we are intentionally training or not.
